In response to Zoonotic diseases, Peoples’ Development Organisation in partnership with Njala University has set-up 16 Community Action groups. this is part of the activities in the West Africa One Health Project implemented in partnership with Njala University funded by IDRC

Over the years, West Africa countries have been severely hit by zoonotic diseases (Ebola, Laser fever, Covid-19 etc) which has led to the decline of its economy. Several efforts have been made in order to ameliorate this problem. One among the many solutions is the implementation of the West Africa One Health Project in Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia and Nigeria. One major activity in the West Africa One Health Project is to establish a Community Action Network (CAN) Group whose mandate are community surveillance in order to prevent and mitigate outbreak of diseases.

The initial role of The People’s Development Organization (PDO) is to identify and establish a gender sensitive Community Action Network (CANs) Groups in eight (8) districts (Kono, Kailahun, kenema, Pujehun, Kambia, Port loko, Falaba and Koinadugu) and sixteen (16) communities in Sierra Leone.

In collaboration with Njala University, a total number of 320 community resident members were identified and selected to be CAN members through a set criteria.

Program Manager Gabriel Timothy Ndanema engaged community stakeholders on identification and selection of CAN members in Dodo, Panguma Chiefdom Kenema District.
